Element: Earth

Virgo people tend to be very conscious of details. They may appear nervous or obsess over health issues. They are likely to be neat and orderly, at least in some area of their life, although they may exhibit the opposite tendency in cases where they have not yet found their guiding principle of organization.

Virgos love work, service to others and the gathering of the fruits of the material world, as symbolized by the harvest. They are also likely to be a good conversationalist, with wide-ranging knowledge and interesting ideas. They can be analytical and perhaps overly fond of detail, with perfectionist tendencies, and they may miss out on the big picture by concentrating on the micro. It also benefits them to learn the fine line between discrimination and criticism. Virgos’ mission in life is the purification of their activity in pursuit of their goals, manifesting their inherent love of excellence in all strivings. (www.astrograph.com

In addition to your sun sign, your astrological element is another determining factor over your “star” personality. The element related to Virgo is Earth. The Earth energy is grounded and heavy, responding to the gravity of physical circumstances and limitations. Earth people are in touch with their bodies and the pleasures of the physical world around them. They are givers of form and structure. They endure.

There are many thoughts about which stones are connected to your Zodiac sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Carnelian, Rock Crystal, Lapis and Rose Quartz for Virgo. These semi-precious gems can be worn, placed in your home or office or carried to improve your positive qualities or alleviate problems associated with your sun sign.

Carnelian manifests your creative energy here on the earth. Carnelian is an orange colored mineral in the Quartz family and can be opaque to translucent. Sometimes it can be banded in varying shades from yellow-orange to reddish brown to a deep red. The stone is mined from the USA, Madagascar, Russia and Brazil but the finest Carnelians are found in India. In ancient Egypt, it was placed in tombs as a magic armor for life after death. Carnelian was widely used in the Roman era, where it was popularly used for making seal rings and signets for imprinting seals with wax for important documents and correspondences.  Carnelian activates the first, second and third chakras (energy centers below the diaphragm) bringing a wave of life force, sexual and creative energies. It is a powerful aid in making things happen and providing the willingness to take the risks inherent in all strong decision making. It also enhances Virgos’ connection to their body and earthly pleasures.

Rock Crystal helps Virgoans to focus on duties and responsibilities.  Rock Crystal-one of the Earth’s most common minerals is also known as Clear Quartz or Quartz Crystal. Because Quartz transmits heat it is cool to touch and Crystal was originally believed to have been ice that had lost its ability to melt. Clear Quartz crystals are the most common and versatile tools in the mineral kingdom. They come in varying degrees of clarity from water clear to densely clouded.

Since ancient times Quartz Crystals have been used for religious purposes and diagnostic healing. In past cultures of Central and South America, Quartz Crystals carved into human skulls were venerated as powerful religious objects-the dwellings of deceased ancestors or gods. Crystals balls brought back by the Crusaders were said to possess magical powers. Rock-solid Virgo can “program” Clear Quartz with focused attention to assist in achieving virtually any goal in inner or outer life. Rock Crystal can bring clarity of thought and purpose to your mind and heart helping you to see the truth of perfection within.  Virgoans can place a quartz crystal in the West (Feng Shui) to bring chi or energy to projects, crafts and creativity.

Lapis calms mental static and invites inner knowing. Lapis is a rock and not a mineral because it is made up of various other minerals. The first part of the name, Lapis, is of Latin origin meaning simply “stone”. Lazuli comes from a variety of words meaning “blue” (azure) or “heaven”. This stone was named after its likeness to the heavens and of course because of its color-a brilliant deep blue which is usually speckled or veined with small flecks of yellow-gold color from its most common mixture of Pyrite (Fool’s Gold) or white streaks from its mixture with Calcite or other minerals. The finest Lapis comes from the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. It can also be found in lesser quality in Chile and Russia. Mines in Western Afghanistan were being worked for Lapis at least six thousand years ago. This source of Lapis may be the oldest continually worked set of mines in the world, as the same mines operating today supplied the sought after stone to the pharaohs. The ancient Egyptians used Lapis in scarabs, pendants and other jewelry as far back as 3100 B.C. It was also ground into powder for use as a medicine and as a cosmetic for eye shadow.

Lapis is the quintessential stone for the obsessive Virgo. It can help calm over analysis of facts and health issues or anything you may become fixated on. Dear Virgo, when you’re drowning in minutiae, grab Lapis and royal powers will lift you to new heights of consciousness and awareness. It is also useful when seeking particular knowledge in an area in which you feel befuddled or confused.

Rose Quartz promotes patience with self. Rose Quartz is a very delicate soft pink, always somewhat milky rather than transparent, and varies in color from off-white to a deep reddish pink color. It’s pink color is unique in the mineral kingdom. Rose Quartz can be found in Brazil, Madagascar and South Dakota in the USA. Legend says that Eros brought Rose Quartz to earth in hopes that its beautiful pink color would arouse love and desire among people. It is believed that the Assyrians along with the Romans were first to use Rose Quartz. The Romans used if for making seals as a sign of ownership. They also considered it a strong healing stone.

Rose Quartz is the cornerstone of the Heart Chakra (one of seven energy centers of the body located in the middle of the chest).  It is a veritable love stone and it is charming in more ways than one for Virgoans. It possesses the power to actually charm its bearer, and, in turn, may charm those you choose to relate to. Rose Quartz enhances your love and tender appreciation of all things. Sometimes you are a rigid thinker and this gentle, warm, forgiving stone opens your heart to self love and compassion for all you do in this world.  Over time, Rose Quartz crystals are prone to fading and are best kept away from prolonged sunlight.

It is essential to cleanse and re-program your crystal after every healing session. Check out my column on How To Care For Your Crystals for more information. *NOTE: Stone therapy should NOT take the place of medical evaluation and procedures, and should be used merely to enhance one’s well-being.
