Zodiac Gem-Stones: Libra by Mary Ann Miller
Libra: September 23-October 22, Element: Air
Libra is the sign of harmony and relationship. The Sun in Libra is at the time of the Equinox, when day equals night, and similarly Libra strives for balance between polarities.
Librans are known for their good taste, elegance and charm. They are seekers of harmony and beauty. Their natural mode of living is in partnership with others. Intimate relationships are quite important to them, as are issues of social justice. Libras forever hope that all parties in a conflict will be satisfied, and they have a tendency to understand and support both sides of a dispute, which can drive their friends crazy unless they are smart enough to find a way to avoid a quarrel, and they may have a hard time making a decision. Artistic pursuits of all kinds provide an outlet for Libras’ love of beauty. They benefit from strengthening their will to act in favor of their higher purpose, which ultimately lies in dedicating themselves to humanity at large. (www.astrograph.com
Air people tend to live in their heads, being logical and scientific, as well as curious about what is around them and detached in their outlook. They dream the world into being with their future-oriented conceptions. They choose all parties to a dispute rather than taking sides, and thus provide the social linkage that can join disparate groups to each other.
There are many thoughts about which stones are connected to your Zodiac sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Obsidian, Carnelian, Rock Crystal and Rose Quartz for Libra. These semi-precious gems can be worn, placed in your home or office or carried to improve your positive qualities or alleviate problems associated with your sun sign.
Obsidian creates a protective shield that helps you remain centered when faced with negativity. Black Obsidian is a pure, glassy black color, which can appear as very dark brown when strong light is shined on thin edges. Obsidian is a natural glass of volcanic origins and formed when hot lava is submerged in water. It is most often mined in Mexico and found around the world.
The name Obsidian is derived from the name of the prominent ancient Roman, Obsius. Because Obsidian breaks with a very sharp fracture, it has been used for making arrowheads and other tools since Paleolithic times. Myth relates that the seven arrows of the Ancient Egyptian lion goddess Sekhmet were sometimes made of Obsidian: she used them magically against wrongdoers. Highly polished Obsidian was used by the Mayans for magic mirrors. Black Obsidian is ideal when you try to maintain balance within a group setting and can assist in purging negativity. It helps focus your inner vision stimulating a clear picture of the required course of action. As you persue your artistic side carry Obsidian to induce creativity. Obsidian creates healthy boundaries. Obsidian leads you to an understanding and acceptance of the darker side of your nature, so that aspect can be evolved and illuminated.
Carnelian opens the path to physical creativity. This stone is an orange colored mineral and a member of the Quartz family. The finest Carnelians are found in India, but most of the stones on the market come from Brazil and Uruguay. Its name is derived from its resemblance in color to the Kornel type of cherry. Carnelians were used in Ancient Egyptian magic as protection for both the living and the dead. A Carnelian was placed on the neck of a mummy to ensure the protection and rebirth for the spirit in the afterlife. A stone of courage, in Roman times a Carnelian was engraved with the head of a lion or a great leader. It was also believed in ancient times to help timid speakers become both eloquent and bold.
Carnelian is associated with the solar plexus chakra located between the navel and diaphragm. This crystal energizes your system and fills you with confidence and courage. If you believe in your unique talents and follow your personal goals rather than those set by others, you can achieve anything. Carnelian is a powerful ally to build passion and power within yourself. It can assist Librans who procrastinate or are unable to decide on a course of action. Helps you overcome fear of doing the wrong thing.
Rose Quartz helps you honor and be good to yourself. Its color ranges from soft pink to golden white. Rose Quartz is mined in Brazil, Madagascar, as well as South Dakota in the USA. In one legend, Adonis, the lover of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, was attacked by Ares (the god of war) who came in the form of a bore. Aphrodite rushed to save him and caught herself on a briar bush. Their mingled blood stained the white quartz to a pink. Zeus took pity on them and restored Adonis to Aphrodite for six months of the year. Because of this myth, this stone has become a symbol of reconciliation in love.
Rose Quartz is a “love stone” and the most important crystal for the Heart Chakra located slightly above and between the breasts. Rose Quartz teaches you to love yourself, vital if you have thought or deemed yourself unlovable. You cannot accept love from others nor love them unless you love yourself. This stone encourages self-forgiveness, and acceptance, and invokes self -trust and self-worth. It promotes receptivity to the beauty of art, music, and the written word, and enlivening imagination. Rose Quartz enhances your peacemaking abillities within your family or at work.
Rock Crystal balances your desire to get along with others and the need to care for yourself. It is one of the Earth’s most common minerals found on every continent and most countries. Rock Crystal is also known as Clear Quartz and Quartz Crystal. It comes is varying degrees of clarity from water clear to densely clouded. The word crystal comes from the ancient Greek word “krystallos” meaning clear ice–celestial water from the heavens that the deities froze so that it would never melt. Austrailian Aboriginals called Quartz the living spirit and mekigars (magic men and women) had Crystal Quartz inserted under their skin, which gave them magical and healing powers.
Clear Quartz embodies the concept of clarity of thought and purpose to your mind and heart and can assist you in overcoming confusion. It is stone of Light bringing heightened spiritual awareness and providing a clear path for strengthening your will in favor of a higher purpose. Unlike most other stones, which carry certain fixed properties, Rock Crystal can be “programmed” by focused attention to assist you in achieving any goal in inner and outer life. Whether the crystal is worn, carried, or placed in your environment, the force, the warmth and the brilliance remain attuned to the energy of you.
It is essential to cleanse and re-program your crystal after every healing session. Check out my column on How To Care For Your Crystals for more information. Background and supporting information for this article came from
