Leo July 23-August 22, Element: Fire

Leos are likely to express themselves in dramatic, creative and assertive ways. They are also likely to enjoy the warmth of the physical Sun. Leos have great energy, courage and honesty. They are likely to be self-confident and maybe even a bit self-indulgent as they expect to be the center of attention, and often are. Leos can be quite determined and usually get their way when they really want to. They also possess great integrity, and are a natural leader.

Leo people are very proud. Their challenge is to temper any tendency for arrogant or egotistical behavior and to instead develop humility and compassion; to learn detachment in the gift of their affections, so that they radiate their abundant energy freely and enhance the life experience of others around them. In addition to your sun sign, there is a another determining factor over your ‘star’ personality – your astrological element. The element related to Leo is Fire. Fire is a radiant form of energy that brings light to the world around it, enthusiastic and excitable, self-oriented, impatient and essentially optimistic. Fire people are honest to a fault, freedom loving and often insist on their own point of view.

There are many ancient and modern astrological lists about which stones are assigned to each of the twelve sun signs. However, using my own intuition, I chose Amethyst, Aventurine, Hematite and Rose Quartz for Leo. These semi-precious gems can be worn or carried to improve your positive qualities or alleviate problems associated with your sun sign.

Amethyst is the premier stone to help balance the Leo ego and administer a dose of reality. Amethyst belongs to the Quartz family and readily found throughout the world including Brazil, Canada, Sri Lanka, and parts of East Africa. Color varies from a deep violet to a pale lavender, almost to the point of being clear. Amethyst was used as a prize gemstone by the ancient Egyptians. Wealthy Greeks and Romans drank from goblets of Amethyst to guard against drunkenness. Shamans of several tribal societies were known to use Amethyst crystals as talismans, or objects of power.

Amethyst is the famous ancient detoxifying stone and helps  addictive Leo get a grip on his faculties.  It especially helps in sobriety, as well as alcohol, food, sex, and other addictions.Amethyst lights the way so that you may see beyond the cycle that consumes your attention and become a part of the greater whole, teaching the lesson of humility and selflessness.

Green Aventurine aligns personal power with the heart center. A member of the Quartz family, Green Aventurine is a green Calcedony that contains small inclusions of fuchsite, a shiny mineral  which gives the stone a glistening effect. It is readily available in Italy, Brazil, India and  Russia. Its name is derived from the Italian a ventura, a type of  glass discovered around the year 1700. The name was chosen because of the similiarities of randomly spaced iridescent sparkles.

Green Aventurine encourages energy to move from the head to the heart center to help Leo remain heart centered, embrace change, growth and renewal. Universal love, truth and prosperity are traits you can gain by working with Green Aventurine. It protects the heart, enhances creativity and acts as an emotional anchor. It helps impatient Leo take everything in stride.

Hematite is grounding and reduces superficiality.Hematite is silver-gray metallic, which is an iron ore. Found in the US, Brazil, and Canada. Hematite is derived from the Greek word meaning “blood”.  It was used in seals as early as 2500 B.C. The ancient Egyptians used Hematite in the creation of their magical amulets such as the carpenter square and headrest amulets and several heart amulets. It was used as an inscription stone for passages from the Book of the Dead. Until recently blusher contained ground hematite, the same mineral that was used to impart a reddish tint to skin tones in past millennia. Hematite is the “stone of mental mastery.” It aids clarity, balance, and calm reason, thus making it a very grounding stone. A protective stone that lovingly bolsters your confidence, will power and boldness. It enhances Leos ability to create peaceful, loving, kind relationships.

Do not cleanse this stone in water. It can be charged over night in a bowl of Quartz, as this will release negative energy and increase its positive energy. Be careful as this stone will retain a “salt blemish” if washed in salt.

Rose Quartz is all about self-love, open heart and heart healing. Rose Quartz can be translucent to clear pink. Found in the US, Brazil, and Japan. It has been used throughout history in almost every great culture for jewelry, crowns and as decorative objects. Beads have been found in Mesopotamia that date back to 7000 BC. Rose Quartz resonates with the Heart Chakra (one of the seven major energy centers of the body) to produce a nuturing, calming and gentle effect. Placed over the heart area, it filters and harmonises energies passing through it in either direction.  It is a very comforting stone that promotes tender appreciation of all things, joyfulness and peace. Helps you discover the ability to love and be more open to other people.

It is essential to cleanse and reprogram your crystal after every healing session.

*NOTE: Stone therapy should NOT take the place of medical evaluation and procedures, and should be used merely to enhance one’s well-being.
