The Winter Solstice is not simply the shortest day of the year, but is the day that dark begins receding and the hours of light grow longer. Celebrations from many religious traditions surround the Winter Solstice. In this season of celebrating, what kinds of things are people doing to celebrate the solstice, the day the light returns? Many traditions light candles -- think Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, the Christian tradition of lighting candles each Sunday in advent, St. Lucy’s Day in Sweden. It is a day that offers many possibilities. One might want to focus on the darkness, others might welcome in the light.
