December 22-January 19

Element: Earth

Capricorn people are ambitious and practical, and are likely to have an excellent sense of social responsibility. They also tend to be conscious of social mores, perhaps to the point of over-concern. Their natural caution allows them to advance slowly and steadily to the top. Capricorn represents the accomplishments of the material and the quest for prestige, honor and success in public achievement. It is also possible that the driving force behind their ambition partially lies in deep-rooted feelings of insecurity.

Capricorns put themselves under enormous pressure to perform, and can feel personally responsible for those around them. They may have suffered from a restrictive early environment, and their aloofness may serve to protect them from dealing with a fear of intimacy, or low self-esteem. Capricorns exemplify the values of hard work and accomplishment, and service to the goals of humanity. Their redemption comes when they allow the spiritual joy that they feel inside to fully express itself in graceful acts of loving-kindness. (www.astrograph.com)

In addition to your sun sign, your astrological element is a another determining factor over your “star” personality. The element related to Capricorn is the Earth element. Earth energy is grounded and heavy, responding to the gravity of physical circumstances and limitations. Earth people are in touch with their bodies and the pleasures of the physical world around them. They are givers of form and structure. They endure.

There are many thoughts about which stones are connected to your Zodiac sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Aquamarine, Citrine, Clear Quartz and Rose Quartz for Capricorn. These semi-precious gems can be worn, placed in your home or office or carried to improve your positive qualities or alleviate problems associated with your sun sign. Choose the ones that resonate with you, dear Capricorn.

Aquamarine brings serenity and flow.It is a transparent variety of Beryl that is blue, blue-green or green in color. Aquamarine comes from the Latin, aqua marina, meaning “water of the sea.”

In legend, Aquamarine was believed to contain the power of the sea and so was dedicated to a number of sea goddesses, including the Greek love goddess, Aphrodite, whose name means ‘born of the foam.’ Ancient Mediterranean sailors, fishermen and sea travelers considered Aquamarine to be a particularly lucky talisman for when on the water. Sailors used it as an amulet to keep them safe from storms and bring them home safely. Aquamarine is mined in Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Africa and the United States.

Capricorns have an intense sense of social responsibility and Aquamarine helps to ease the emotional pain of not achieving a “perfect society”. It emits a gentle and compassionate energy, exhibiting moderation; it helps one who is “swamped” by responsibility to bring order to the process. Aquamarine stimulates the ideal service to the world and to the development of humanity.

Citrine lightens your energy. Much of the Citrine on the market today is heat-treated Amethyst. In general the deeper amber and orangish shades are heat treated while the natural Citrines are mostly a pale yellow color. Crystals and minerals are used to high temperatures within the Earth, so this heating does not harm them. In this article I recommend the heat treated Citrine as it is readily available and easy to purchase at your local rock shop. The name Citrine comes from the French word citron, meaning lemon.

Citrine was used as a gem in Greece as far back as 300 B.C. and was worked into cabochon ring stones and intaglios in Greece and Rome through the first and second centuries A.D.

Capricorns need to play more and Citrine brightens your outlook on life and releases joy. Citrine promotes a radiance within the self, culminating in a constant happy disposition and helps you to laugh without restraint. It releases the need to control. This is an ideal stone to have present in situations where you need to feel confident and secure.

Clear Quartz sees the Universal Source. Quartz Crystal is a clear, transparent form of quartz which has not been colored by the pressure of other minerals. It is the “purest” of all quartzes. Clear Quartz is also known as Rock Crystal or Quartz Crystal and is one of the most common minerals found on Earth.

The name comes from the Greek krystallos meaning “ice” – celestial water from the heavens that the deities froze so it would never melt. According to legend, Hercules dropped the crystal of truth from Mount Olympus and it shattered into the millions of pieces that we find today as clear quartz crystal.

Folklore and spiritual beliefs have surrounded Quartz Crystal for thousands of years. Indigenous cultures in North America and Burma believed Clear Quartzes to be living entities and presented them with food as ritual offerings. In past cultures of Central and South America, Quartz Crystals carved into human skulls were venerated as powerful religious objects.

Clear Quartz is a stone of Light, bringing heightened spiritual awareness when you wear, carry or meditate with it. It brings clarity of thought and purpose to your mind and heart and can assist in overcoming confusion. Clear Quartz will uplift your view and stimulate your spiritual connection and your body’s ability to carry an expanded range of Light frequency. This amazing stone can be programmed by focused attention to assist you in achieving and manifesting your dearest wish for the highest good.

Rose Quartz helps you soften into self-love. Rose Quartz usually occurs in massive form but sometimes grows in clusters of small prismatic crystals. Its name is derived from its color, which ranges from very soft pink to a deep reddish pink. It is mined in Brazil, Madagascar and South Dakota.

Throughout history, Rose Quartz has been a symbol for love and beauty. Although not much is known historically about Rose Quartz, beads were found in the area once known as Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq) that date back to 7000 BC. Rose Quartz jewelry was known to be crafted by the Assyrians during the time span of 800-600 BC and the Romans considered it a strong healing stone. Those ageless Egyptian women believed the pink stone prevented aging.

Ambitious and driven Capricorn could use a dose of “heartiness” for their advancement to the top. This stone’s gentle, loving energy will remind you to be kind to yourself. Insecure Capricorns will benefit from Rose’s pink glow and flow of heart energy to demonstrate your worth in the world and remind you to come from your heart center when out and about working hard. Rose Quartz’s energy is a reminder that you are okay and no matter what you have or have not achieved in this lifetime that you are worthy of love. Identify all the beauty that surrounds you, not only within all things and within all others, but most importantly within yourself. Rose Quartz is a must have for all Capricorns.

Cancerians are nurturing and protective of others. Their ruling planet is the Moon, and they tend to be moody, with constantly changing emotions. Cancerians are also likely to be security-conscious and highly value their home life. They may appear passive, and tend to rely on their feelings to make decisions. They are subtle, rather than direct, and are likely to reflect the moods of those around them.

Cancerians may be involved with the past in some way, because the sign of Cancer, the sign of nurturing, protecting and sustaining, is strongly tied to the past, and the principle of Karma. They tend to collect the residue of past experience and hold onto it, allowing it to color present activities and lead them to instinctual action. Rather than allowing themselves to be driven by their changing moods, they benefit from shedding the light of conscious reason on their habitual patterns and focusing on their true goals. (www.astrograph.com). In addition to your Cancer sun sign, there is a another determining factor
over your ‘star’ personality – your astrological element. The element related to Cancer is water. Water people are tuned in to a deeper and subtler reality than other types around them. Their emotions range the gamut from fear and dislike to an unconditional acceptance and love of the world and the creatures they find within it.

There is a plethora of information and lists about which stones are connected to each sun sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Garnet, Hematite, Obsidian and Rose Quartz for Cancer based on ancient principles and others that might help alleviate problems associated with that particular sign.

Garnet grounds and balances emotions and provides emotional safety. Garnet is a gemstone most commonly known to be red, but in fact it ranges in color from deep emerald green through yellow, orange, brown and black. Garnet comes from the Latin word granatum which meant ‘pomegranate’”
resembling a pomegranate seed in form and color. As far back as 3100 B.C.,the Egyptians crafted Garnets into beautiful jewelry and beads for clothing, crowns and dinnerware. It was believed to be used by Noah, who made it into a lantern which lead the ark through long, dark nights. Persians considered it the ‘royal stone’ and carved the faces of their kings in the stone. Garnet is common to the US but found all over the world. Garnet is the most famous for balancing emotional states for the moody Cancerian. It is a good stone to have around for emotional drama, traumatic crisis or when you feel backed into a corner with no way out. For Cancerians who tend to hold onto the past, garnet assists in maintaining a sense of calm and grounded connection to the present and helps you let go of useless, old or obsolete ideas. Garnet can also help to cultivate a sense of physical security and safety.

Hematite calms the mind and emotions, promotes common sense and balance. Hematite is silver-gray metallic, which is an iron ore. Hematite is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘blood.’ In soft powder or sedimentary form, this crystal is called “red ocher.” Egyptians used Hematite to calm
hysteria and anxiety. Roman soldiers wore it for protection. Native Americans used red ocher for ceremonies and for war paint. Found in the US, Brazil and Canada. Hematite is the most effective stone for grounding yourself in the body and physical world. It can counteract spaciness and confusion, helping you to see practical concerns and move forward with useful action. Carrying or
wearing a Hematite can assist in bringing your dreams and aspirations into reality and in learning the difference between a true vision and fantasy. Hematite assists Cancerians to move away from polarization and move toward unity with humanity. Hematite enhances integration of the shadow self.

Obsidian is a powerful protector, creates an energetic boundary and helps detachment. Obsidian is natural glass that is formed when hot lava is submerged in water. It is a glassy, silica-rich volcanic rock. The name Obsidian is derived from the name of the prominent ancient Roman, Obsius. Obsidian is mostly black or very dark brown, but it can also be gray or green. In addition, various sheens, color variations, markings and undertones of color make for an array of different types of Obsidian. The
stone has been used by many cultures for jewelry and tools. Obsidian arrowheads are often found, dating back to the Paleolithic times. It is mined in Mexico and around the world. Obsidian can assist Cancerians who are very psychically or emotionally sensitive to help maintain the integrity of their energy fields. Obsidian is like a ‘psychic vacuum cleaner,’ eliminating negative energies in yourself
and your environment. It brings about objectivity, dis-attachment and is grounding. It reduces fantasy and escapism and helps Cancerians focus on their true goals. Self-control is increased by the use of this stone. Black Obsidian’s energy creates a protective shield that helps you remain centered.

Rose Quartz is an emotional balancer. Rose Quartz can be translucent to clear pink. It is known to have been in use since at least 2500 BC. The Romans and Egyptians used powdered Rose Quartz in cosmetics in the belief that it could prevent wrinkles and produce a flawless complexion. It has been used throughout history in almost every great culture for jewelry, crowns and as decorative objects. It is minied in the US, Brazil, South Africa, India and Madagascar. Rose Quartz works with the Heart Chakra (one of seven energy centers of the body located in the middle of the chest). It is a soft, gentle,
soothing stone that warms the heart center. Its soothing vibrations are a balm to the emotions. It engenders the release of tension and stress. Rose Quartz is calming for the mind, assisting one in releasing worry, fear, anxiety and past emotional trauma. Rose Quartz is essential for the
watery Cancerian for it produces a restful, cooling energy that will restore calmness, balance and clarity to the emotions.

It is essential to cleanse and reprogram your crystal after every healing session. Check out my column on How To Care For Your Crystals for more information.

Gemini people tend to be airy and intellectual, glib of tongue and curious about life and other people. They can experience two sides of things at the same time, and may tend to be flighty. Geminorum (the plural of Gemini) move through life like butterflies, engaging in many varied experiences to gain knowledge. They are witty, have a good sense of humor, are likely to be excellent conversationalists and make good teachers. They can be nervous and high-strung, and may be mischievous. Unlike possessive Taurus, they tend toward liberty in relationship. And although Geminorum can be easily bored, under the control of self-discipline they have tremendous intellectual and artistic possibilities. (www.astrograph.com)

In addition to your sun sign and the zodiacal influences, there is a another determing factor over your ‘star’ personality — your astrological element. The element related to Gemini is air. Air people tend to live in their heads, being logical and scientific, as well as curious about what is around them and detached in their outlook. They dream the world into being with their future-oriented conceptions. They choose all parties in a dispute rather than taking sides, and thus provide the social linkage that can join disparate groups to each other.

There is a plethora of information and lists about which stones are connected to each sun sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Aquamarine, Carnelian, Clear Quartz and Rose Quartz for Gemini based on ancient principles and others that might help alleviate problems associated with that particular sign.

Aquamarine comes from the Latin, aqua marina, meaning “water of the sea”. Ancient Mediterranean sailors, fishermen and sea travelers considered aquamarine to be a particularly lucky talisman for when on the water. Sea travelers carried aquamarine amulets to calm their fears in perilous situations and fishermen believed the amulets had the power to increase the size of their catch. And, in times of danger on the high seas, sailors believed the amulets would transfer unmatched bravery to their souls, giving them the power to overcome the most violent storm. Aquamarine is mined in Brazil, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Africa and the United States.

For Gemini women, aquamarine lends the courage and clarity to express inner knowing. For Gemini men, Aquamarine helps dispel emotional numbness and the difficulty men sometimes experience in communicating their feelings. For all Geminorum, aquamarine promotes gentle, truthful, compassionate communication. Geminorum tend to get or feel overloaded with responsibility and aquamarine helps restore order to their world. Its energies are soothing to the emotions and particularly cooling to anger or hostility.

Carnelian gets flighty Gemini back to a creative, sensual self-life center. Carnelian can vary in color from pale orange to deep red-orange or it can be banded in varying shades. Its name is derived from its resemblance in color to the Kornel type of cherry. Carnelian has been used in jewelry since before Christ and was the favorite stone of Mohammad and verses from the Koran have been found engraved on this stone. The finest Carnelians are found in India, although most of the stones today are from Brazil and Uruguay. Carnelian helps Geminorum to get out of their head and back into their body. It lends vitality and invigorates the physical body, reminding Gemini of their creative nature. This is the perfect stone for awakening your inherent talents and skills. Carnelian will encourage you to take the risks inherent in all strong decisions.

Clear Quartz helps focus intent and reduces mental restlessness. Quartz crystal is a clear, transparent form of quartz which has not been colored by the pressure of other minerals. It is the “purest” of all quartzes. Clear quartz is also known as Rock Crystal or Quartz Crystal and is one of the most common minerals found on Earth. The ancient Greeks believed that quartz crystal was water frozen so hard it could never thaw. The name comes from the Greek krystallos meaning “ice.” Folklore and spiritual beliefs have surrounded quartz crystal for thousands of years. The Japanese called it “the perfect jewel” and viewed it as a symbol of infinite space, purity, perseverance and patience. Indigenous cultures in North America and Burma believed clear quartzes to be living entities and presented them with food as ritual offerings. In past cultures of Central and South America, quartz crystals carved into human skulls were venerated as powerful religious objects.

Air signs like Gemini spend a great deal of time in their head and that can be exhausting bouncing from one idea to another. Quartz crystal alleviates some of that wandering and can assist in overcoming confusion. It brings clarity of thought and purpose to your mind and heart. Clear quartz will also amplify your prayers, wishes and positive visualizations.

Taureans revel in the pleasures of life. They crave the security and comfort of relaxing in the warmth of their home environment. They value the senses and the enjoyment of material things. Taureans are likely to work hard to make their home an attractive one. They also have the makings of a healer and have a large capacity for kindness. Although they are quiet on the surface, almost passive, Taureans possess a powerful will and can be quite stubborn at times, and perhaps somewhat rigid in their thinking. Taureans also tend to be loving, obedient and loyal. Material rewards seem to come easily to them, and they are able to lead the good life without being excessively concerned about it. Taureans
are practical, and provide a purposeful, productive and stabilizing influence for themselves and all those around them. (www.astrograph.com)

If you were born between April 20 and May 20, in addition to your sun sign and the zodiacal influences, there is a another determining factor over your star’ personality – your astrological element. The element related to Taurus is Earth. The Earth energy is grounded and heavy, responding to the gravity of physical circumstances and limitations. Earth people are in touch with their bodies and the pleasures of the physical world around them.

There is a plethora of information and lists about which stones are connected to each sun sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Carnelian, Lapis, Petrified Wood and Turquoise for Taurus based on ancient principles and others that might help alleviate problems associated with
that particular sign.

Petrified Wood, the Tree of Life, captures Taurus’ essence; aids in connection with nature. It is also called fossilized wood or agatized wood and is a member of the Quartz family. If wood, after death, is
quickly covered with fine grained sedimentary rock, this allows for petrification, which preserves a large proportion of the original form of the wood. Growth rings, outer bark and even worm holes in the wood can be preserved in this process. Most Petrified Wood is brown or gray, although somes pieces contain yellow, red, black and even blue or violet colors.

The most spectacular Petrified Wood comes from Holbrook, Arizona, and in 1962, the Petrified Forest’ there was made into a national park. Petrified Wood is a stone of roots, beginnings and ancient knowledge. It is a powerful stone for Earth healers and help for Taureans who wish to make the shift from all of Nature’s consumerist consciousness into resonance with the power, beauty and wisdom of the natural world. It can assist you in ‘grounding’ so more energy can run through your physical
body.

Carnelian helps you feel comfortable with your sensual self. It is a member of the Quartz family and can range in color from yellow- orange to reddish brown to a deep red and sometimes can be banded in varying shades. The finest Carnelians are found in India, but most of the stones on the market come from Brazil and Uruguay. The name Carnelian is derived from the Latin word “carnis” and translates to “flesh,” probably noted as one of the many shades of the stone. In ancient times, Carnelian was believed
to give the wearer courage in battle and to help timid speakers become both eloquent and bold. In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was used as protection for both the living and the dead. A Carnelian was placed on the neck of a mummy to ensure the protection, safe passage, and rebirth ofthe spirit in the afterlife. The famous Eye of Horus carnelian amulet, said to offer protection against the evil eye, is still popular in many parts of the Middle East. Carnelian aids in the ability to keep you connected to the physical self
enhancing the lusty desires of the body and playfulness of creative consciousness. It inspires courage.

Lapis Lazuli cleanses the mind and expands perception. Lapis is deep blue flecked with gold Pyrite and/or White Calcite. In Latin, the name meansblue stone’ and this came from the ancient Persian word lazhuward, which meant blue’. The ancient Egyptians used Lapis in scarabs, pendants and other jewelry as far back as 3100 B.C. It was also ground into powder for use as a medicine and as a cosmetic for eye shadow. King Tut’s golden sarcophagus is richly inlaid in Lapis, as were the burial ornaments of
other Egyptian kings and queens. The finest Lapis comes from the West Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. It can also be found in lesser quality in Chile and Russia. Lapis is the stone of royalty in its truest nature and is the premier stone for enhancing sensuality and enjoyment of material pleasures.
Lapis Lazuli teaches of the inter-connectiveness of all things. It is a stone of self-knowledge and reflection. This gives you clearer perspective on your life and creations.

Turquoise opens communication and expression. Its striking blue color is caused by copper. The name Turquoise comes from the French ‘pierre turquoise’, meaning Turkish stone.’ This is because the trade routes through which Turquoise reached Europe from the mines in central Asia went through Turkey. Turquoise may be the longest used of all gemstones. Beads dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in Iraq. Native Americans began to mine and fashion Turquoise about 1000 years ago. The best quality
Turquoise comes from Iran, Afghanistan, Australia, Tibet and the southwestern United States.
Turquoise makes it easier to articulate and speak your deepest wisdom. It helps you understand that you have something important to contribute to the planet. Turquoise instills inner calm while remaining alert and helps you embrace all aspects of yourself as reflection of the Divine Source.

Aries people tend to be energetic, forceful and outgoing. They are good at getting things done, although they prefer starting to finishing. Like the energy of the first rush of spring, they move into the world in a
headstrong, pioneering way. Aries people are likely to rush into things before reflecting, and may be impatient or unwilling to sit back and allow events to mature. They have great vitality and a tremendous need to be physically active.

Aries people have a strong will and are self-centered about pursuing it, so that they may try to dominate other people until they learn to be more subtle about getting their way. They also have an acute need for love and affection. Aries people benefit from self-discipline, so that they can channel their abundant energy more constructively (www.astrograph.com). In addition to your sun sign and the zodiacal influences, there is another determining factor over your star personality.

The astrological element related to Aries is fire. Fire is a radiant form of energy that brings light to the world around it, enthusiastic and excitable, self-oriented, impatient and essentially optimistic.

Your zodiac gemstones are more than a symbol of your astrology sign — they actually receive the vibrations of the constellation and can strengthen planetary influences. There is a plethora of information and many different lists relating to the astrological use of gemstones or which gemstones are connected to each sun sign. However, using my own intuition, I chose Bloodstone, Jade, Amethyst and Rose Quartz for Aries based on ancient principles and others that might help alleviate problems associated with that particular sign.

Bloodstone is the power stone for Aries. It symbolizes courage and is known as the warrior stone. Bloodstone is a variety of quartz. It is
dark green with red spots and blotches. It is also known as Heliotrope, from the Greek meaning ‘sun turner,’ inferring that the reflection of the
sun is blood-red. In the Middle Ages, the red spots were thought to be spots of Christ’s blood, and special magical powers were attributed to the
stones. India is the primary source for bloodstone.

Bloodstone can help in feeling capable and self-sufficient. It instills courage and assists you in taking the right action. Bloodstone grounds the
fire fully in your body, helping you to function with strength, determination and courage through challenges in everyday life. Bloodstone reduces impatience and irritability.

Jade is a premier stone to help you chill out, balance your physical energy, and harmonize your existence. Jade comes in two varieties, Jadeite
and Nephrite. Nephrite the more commonly found variety generally occurs in three colors-white, deep green and creamy brown and can be found in British Columbia, California, Alaska, New Zealand, and China. Jadeite can be leafy green, blue-green, emerald green, lavender or greenish black. The main source of Jadeite is Burma, but it can also be found in Guatemala, Russia, California and Japan Jade is calming to the nervous system and helps you channel passions in a constructive way, making expressions of love easier. Jade aids in courage, justice and wisdom. Jade is a humbling stone for the fiery Ariean.

Amethyst helps you see where you really need to go and aids focus of your abundant energy. Amethyst is crystalline quartz in shades of purple,
lilac or mauve and is readily found throughout the world including Brazil, Canada, Africa, and Russia. The word amethyst comes from the Greek
meaning ’without drunkenness.’ In Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of intoxication and wine, was pursuing a maiden called Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain chaste, which the goddess Artemis granted and transformed her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethystos’s desire to remain chaste, Dionysus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple. Traditionally Amethyst was worn to guard against drunkenness, to instill a sober mind and break bad habits.

For the Ariean, it can relieve stress from the many unfinished projects and bestow stability, strength, and peace. Amethyst can help calm passion, emotional violence and anger; a good stone for protection from self-deception.

Rose Quartz softens the Ariean fire. Rose Quartz usually occurs in massive form but sometimes grows in clusters of small prismatic crystals. Its name is derived from its color, which ranges from very pale pink to a deep reddish pink. It is mined in Brazil, Madagascar and South Dakota.
Rose Quartz is the quintessential love stone. It opens the heart to love and encourages you to be tender, peaceful and gentle. It helps you
feel a strong sense of self-worth, therefore being worthy of love. Your desire for love and affection begins with you. Rose Quartz assists you in
developing feelings of self-love and the ability to nurture yourself.

Remember to cleanse and program your stones. Check out my column on How To Care For Your Crystals for more information.

In literal terms it means the “circle of life” and refers to the elliptical circle that also happens to be the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Throughout the year, as the Earth orbits around the sun, the skies and constellations change. The zodiac is a thin band of the sky on either side of the elliptical that forms the resulting patterns in the sky called constellations. Within these constellations one can find the signs of the zodiac.

There are twelve zodiac signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The twelve signs are like months of the calendar but based on the stellar patterns that appear during a particular time of year. For example, if someone says, “I’m a Pisces,” this refers to the time of a person’s birth at the time of year when the Sun is in the zodiac sign of Pisces. The Sun is in the constellation of Pisces at nearly the same time each year — roughly February 19 to March 20.

Over time, astrologers assigned gems of certain colors to the twelve signs of the zodiac to help people influence the planetary energy in their favor. The earliest mention of a set of twelve gemstones is from the Bible. It has a detailed description of Aaron’s breastplate: “The first row shall be a row of ruby, topaz and emerald; and the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and a diamond; and the third row a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst; and the fourth row a beryl and an onyx and a jasper.” The description of Aaron’s breastplate is believed to document a correlation between the twelve stones in the breastplate, the twelve months of the year and the twelve signs of the zodiac.

A stone can have influence over one’s life. This idea finds its basis in the harmony and shared energy that exists between all things. The custom of actually wearing birthstone jewelry first gained popularity in Poland in the fifteenth century. That tradition suggested that wearing a birthstone during your birth month could heighten your energetic sensitivity for that month. But your zodiac gemstones are more than a symbol of your astrology sign. They actually receive the vibrations of the constellation and can strengthen planetary influences.

In ancient times, without modern scientific tools, ‘sapphire’ meant any blue stone, ‘emerald’ any green stone and ‘ruby’ anything red. Other gemstone names may have shifted over the years to mean different minerals; yet, despite that uncertainty, the tradition of zodiac gemstones remains.

Using my own intuition, I chose Piscean gemstones based on ancient principles and other guiding principles that might help alleviate problems associated with that particular sign. Choose the ones that resonate with you, dear Pisces.

Pisceans are friendly and likable, and yet can be very moody and introspective. Pisces is a watery sign, concerned with subtle emotions and secret mystical depths. Pisceans are not entirely at home in this world. They may at times prefer their inner life to this one. Pisceans are dreamy and full of imagination, and influenced by everything around them, being quite sensitive to the emotions of others. They can be strong when necessary, but may have a hard time making a decision. At their best Pisceans are truly compassionate, offering service, love and understanding to all. (www.astrograph.com)

For Pisces, amethyst feels like home. Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. It appears transparent with pointed crystals. It may be a geode, cluster, or single point. Found throughout the world, amethyst is one of the most common crystals. It protects your sensitive energy and soothes the weary Pisces soul. Amethyst enhances visions for the highly intuitive Pisces. As Pisces are restless, especially when it comes to emotions, Amethyst can help balance the nervous system and the brain. Wearing Amethyst maintains the inner space of your body and energy field in a state of balance and well-being.

Amethyst is a classic meditation tool; it allows ease into a meditative state, and maintains conscious awareness while in communion with the Divine. Amethyst is helpful for those who do not feel that they are native to the Earth plane, or who experience a constant longing for a ‘home’ on other worlds, systems or dimensions. Amethyst can also accelerate the development of intuitive and psychic abilities as well as provide a valuable protective tool for anyone doing that work. Amethyst harmonizes with all varieties of quartz, including rose quartz and smoky quartz.

Rose quartz brings compassion to the Piscean, helping to clear the emotional body. Rose quartz’s name is derived from its color, which ranges from very pale pink to deep reddish pink. Its clarity can range from opaque to translucent to transparent, although most transparent pieces are rather foggy. Rose quartz is found in Brazil and Madagascar, as well as South Dakota in the USA. It helps dissolve boundaries of isolation and mistrust and can move you into the sense of union with the All That Is, the essence at the core of the heart. Rose quartz teaches you how to love yourself. This stone encourages self-forgiveness and acceptance and invokes self-trust and self-worth.

Smokey quartz helps Pisces to ground so that they are not overwhelmed by emotions; it appears translucent with long pointed crystals with darker ends and can vary in color from very pale tan to deep chocolate brown. Its color comes from natural irradiation. Clear quartz can be made smoky
artificially by treating it with radium. Smokey quartz can be found in many countries including Australia,
Madagascar and the USA. It can help a Piscean to come back to their body and the physical world. It lends focus and is useful for helping to bring dreams and inspired ideas into physical reality. Smokey quartz is one of the premier grounding stones. It can also help Pisceans to feel more engaged in the world and more capable of creating or changing their reality. Smokey quartz works in harmony with other grounding stones such as obsidian.

Mary Ann Miller grew up in Northern California near the Sierra Nevada Mountains and enjoyed the advantages of living close to nature. Her interest in rocks began as a child as she filled her pockets with sparkly shapes and colored stones. Rocks were never far from her reach as her fascination continued with collecting and digging for crystals.

Many years later, after a career in teaching and raising her family, Mary Ann found herself drawn to the world’s largest Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson, Arizona. Over several years she purchased countless minerals, crystals, and fossils and began to study their metaphysical attributes and utilized them for healing, manifesting, and meditation. Each rock, mineral and crystal has unique characteristics as well as specific colored stones that have a particular effect on the energy centers – chakras — of the body.

Mary Ann discovered the effect that stones and crystals have on the inner self falls off with distance. So she began to design jewelry for herself and friends to help facilitate the metaphysical and healing properties of the gem stones. The spirit-filled jewelry and her knowledge of the stones caught the attention of her Santa Cruz, California community and her career as a designer was launched.

Mary Ann developed a home business, Rock Your Life, in order to sell her rock collection and jewelry. Over the years she created four tumbled stone products wholesaling to retail shops across the United States and Canada. The creative force of nature continues to influence and awe Mary Ann as she sees each bead as the result of powerful elements that came together over time.

Mary Ann believes sacred jewelry can be a healing tool as well as an attractive piece of adornment. She continues to run her business, Rock Your Life, and design jewelry from her home in Boulder, Colorado.
